Discussions about push and pull factors of migration in the midst of the European Refugee Crisis might get a different flavour when considering public health statistics. Average life expectancy in the Top 5 EU destination countries was 80 years in 2013, compared to 75 years for the sample countries of the Balkan Peninsula - which are origin, transit and destination countries - and 67 years for the Top 5 refugee origin countries. Starting in the EU, as we move towards the South-East we see rising gaps in life expectancy, but simultaneously a decrease in total health expenditures in per cent of GDP and increasing shares of out-of-pocket expenditures , associated with a higher poverty risk.
