From the 13th of August 1961 onwards, the Berlin Wall separated West from East Germany and went through the heart of the capital city.
Finally, on the 9th of November 1989 all citizens of the German Democratic Republic could visit West Germany and West Berlin. Thousands of people crossed the border to celebrate.
The Fall of the Berlin Wall marked the start of the German reunification process, which was concluded in October 1990.
The pictures to the left show some impressions from my stay in Berlin (April to July 2010) around the East Side Gallery. It is a 1.3 km long part of the Berlin Wall, which is frequently 'repainted' by artists from all over the world and a memorial for freedom.
